Tips for a Successful Layover and Journey

  • All horses must be up to date on all vaccines and worming.
  • Farrier history
  • Dental needs & history
  • Notifying FES staff of any peculiarities
    • Such as poor drinking habits, or high metabolisms that may require more attention.
    • Poor ground manners
  • Label all tack and equipment left with your horse
  • Fill out and complete all boarding documents and keep current contact info on file.
  • Ensure all tack and equipment is labeled with owners and horses names
  • Have all contact info in an envelope with any necessary paperwork (ie health certificate for crossing into USA)
  • Please ensure you provide necessary blankets that may be required on the journey. Remember weather can change drastically and very quickly!
  • It's preferred that horses do not ship with standing wraps, especially for long hauls. Avoid if at all possible.
  • Please ship horses in leather halters. These are the safest for your horse as they will break if they are stuck or go down. Most transport companies have spares in case of emergency.
  • Please send clear instructions and properly labelled medications or supplements should your horse require them during transport.
  • Let us know if your horse has any behavioural or health issues. (ie. We would rather know he doesn't back up before we put him on the truck! That way we can do load plans accordingly!)
  • It's a good precaution to send electrolytes with your horse when they are travelling to warmer climates or are poor drinkers on the transport.
